Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical, effective and proven solution for resolving hair loss issues such as thinning hair, a receding hairline, pattern baldness and more. SMP offers both men and women a way to get over baldness issues.

It is natural you will have questions around SMP’s durability and the nature any kind of fading process, we are here to help. Here we dive into the nuances of SMP fading, and we differentiate between initial fading, fading between treatment sessions and the long-term fading that can occur many years after SMP treatment has finished.

The SMP journey typically unfolds over multiple sessions, with most clients requiring 2-4 visits to achieve the desired density and shade. A crucial part of this process involves the healing period between sessions, where the treated areas develop scabs that are larger and darker than the pigment underneath. This can lead to a significant but temporary change in appearance, which is often mistaken for fading.

In reality, this initial change is a normal and expected part of the healing process. As the skin heals and the scabs fall away, the pigment may appear lighter. Skilled SMP technicians anticipate this and adjust the pigment’s darkness in subsequent sessions to gradually build up to the final color. This methodical approach ensures a realistic and textured look, often referred to as 3D SMP.

Over time, all SMP treatments will experience some degree of fading. This long-term fading is influenced by several factors, including the body’s immune response and exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Unlike traditional tattoos, SMP pigments are placed at a shallower depth in the skin, making them more susceptible to these outside factors.

To maintain the appearance of your SMP, a top-up session is recommended every 3-5 years. These sessions are typically shorter and less costly than the initial treatment and are crucial for correcting any fading that has occurred. This ensures the SMP remains looking its very best.

The Immune System and UV Exposure plays a role: The body’s immune system plays a significant role in how SMP fades over time, as it attempts to break down the foreign pigment particles. Additionally, regular exposure to sunlight can accelerate the fading process, emphasizing the importance of protecting the scalp from UV rays.

Initially, the scalp micropigmentation treatment plan involves 3 to 5 sessions based on individual needs, and there’s a mandatory pause for healing of at least seven days between each session; this allows teh skin the scalp to recover, and the pigment stabilises.

There is formation and subsequent shedding of scabs over each applied microdot, and this can temporarily darkens and enlarges the appearance of the pigment. So at this point it can be easy to misunderstand the process when the scabs are healing and falling off. What’s happening is the lighter pigmentation is revealed underneath. So in essence, apparent fading between each sessions is typical, yet this isn’t actual true fading because after the final session of SMP, SMP lasts for years without any kind of top up.

An experienced SMP technician, will skillfully adjust pigment intensity across sessions to gradually build up to the desired density and shade, therefore achieving what is known as a 3D effect in scalp micropigmentation.

To clarify: if you notice the pigment turns lighter shortly after your sessions, don’t panic. At Simon Symeou SMP we encourage our clients to reach out at any point with any questions. Gaining understanding about the SMP process is a part of ensuring transparency so you’re fully aware of what is happening.

Individual lifestyle choices can also impact SMP’s longevity. Activities that promote excessive sweating, frequent exposure to sunlight, and regular swimming in chlorinated pools can contribute to faster fading. Following a comprehensive aftercare routine and minimizing scalp exposure to harsh conditions can help prolong the results.
